Nurse Practitioner Program

Message from the Director of Advanced Practice Nursing

Dr. Elaine BallardWelcome!

This is an exciting time to consider becoming an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN).  The American Nurses Association (ANA) believes that the key to a reformed U.S. Health Care System is the Advanced Practice Nurse. Did you know that there are over 140,000 nurse practitioners (NPs) practicing in the U.S.?

In order to meet the health care needs of a growing population, many more APRNs are needed. Does this sound like the career path that you wish to take?

The nurse practitioner faculty stand ready to help prepare you for this challenging role.

The University of Texas at Tyler prepares the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) for the role of Nurse Practitioner within the following population foci:

The graduate develops expertise as a primary care provider with advanced practice skills in the assessment and management of health needs as well as in patient education, consultant and researcher roles. The program uses Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) concepts and cultural competence to prepare the NP graduate to provide a lifetime of comprehensive, culturally competent, quality primary health care services.

The Nurse Practitioner degree option is 48 semester credit hours in length. Although not totally online, 30 of these hours are offered online with the remainder 18 hours of clinical courses offered in a web-enhanced format requiring some class time on the Tyler campus. The MSN-NP option can also be pursued as a Post-Master’s certification track.

The Nurse Practitioner Faculty are committed to providing a nurturing environment for students. Strong mentoring will be provided to foster completion of the NP program.

The MSN NP program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Please take time to tour our Website. We welcome any questions you might have and look forward to working with you as a potential student in our program. For more information, please contact RaeJean Griffin at rgriffin@uttyler.edu, 903.566.7243
