The University of Texas at Tyler has partnered with Brookshire Grocery Company to develop a first-of-its-kind retail lab to assist students interested in retail management, Dr. Harold Doty, College of Business and Technology dean, announced.

This retail lab is the culmination of a two-year partnership between academia and industry to provide a hands-on laboratory experience for students.

A grand opening ceremony will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 17 in the UT Tyler Business Building, room 151.

“The CBT makes every effort to lead innovation in and outside of East Texas and we have accomplished this in the retail lab,” said Doty. “Our future retail management programs will aid industry by providing prepared students that are knowledgeable in future technologies and equipment. This is an example of the achievements possible between a business school and a business community.”

The lab consists of 16 student computer stations, one instructor station and one point-of-sale register system with connections to the student computers and Brookshire Grocery Company to facilitate project management and implementation. Two gondola merchandise fixtures for student practice of visual merchandising concepts complete the lab.

Brookshire Grocery Company has led the retail industry contributions with equipment and labor donations. Other contributors include Texas Retailers Education Foundation, NCR point-of-sale and RedPrairie of SoftGrocer Software System.
