Education Students in Belize for 2011 service learning project

Nine education students at The University of Texas at Tyler participated in a joint service learning trip to Punta Gorda, Belize earlier this month, Dr. William Geiger, College of Education and Psychology dean, announced.

Joining eight students from Baylor University, they visited with teachers and worked with students in rural area schools.

“Students returned with a deep appreciation for the Belizean people and a new understanding of education in underdeveloped countries,” said Dr. Peggy Gill, UT Tyler professor of educational leadership and policy studies, who served as a co-organizer.

Dr. Wes Hickey, UT Tyler associate professor of educational leadership and policy studies, also traveled with the group as a co-organizer.

“Although Dr. Hickey and I have been working in Belize for several years, this trip was the most amazing ever,” Gill added. “To see UT Tyler students engaging in conversations with Belize teachers was very powerful. Our students fell in love with the children and the children fell in love with them. We will definitely continue offering this trip.”

UT Tyler students listed by hometown are:

CHINA SPRING – Rita Pard.

GEORGETOWN – Cecily Cutler and Tiffany Herron.

GREENVILLE – Christina Gibson.

HOUSTON – Katie Kinsey.

LINDALE – Michael Moore.

PARIS – Katlyn Caraway.

TYLER – Chinyere Onwuzurumba and Glenn Wiggins.

This cooperative effort between the two universities was sponsored by “Teachers for a Better Belize,” which has been working within Belize schools for more than 10 years.

UT Tyler students brought story books and demonstrated an Interactive Read-Aloud in every classroom. They also had the opportunity to spend time with local Peace Corps Volunteers, who also work in these schools.
