The University of Texas at Tyler debate team has become the only team in the nation to receive invites to all three of the exclusive debate tournaments known as round robins this year, Dr. Dennis Cali, Department of Communication chair, announced.
“Unlike regular tournaments, which are open invitation, round robins are tournaments that require an application process,” said Dr. Charles Walts, director of forensics.
Applicants are accepted on the basis of their qualifications such as win/lose ratio, reputation and national ranking.
Currently, the team of Alex Warren of Tyler and Travis Smith of Palestine has more debate victories than any other team in the country and carry a 4 to 1 win/loss ratio.
“For any team that is an amazing ratio, and for us it has become our own standard of excellence and a ratio that we expect to maintain throughout the season,” Walts added.
Other current members are Addison Gribbin of Ennis and Michael Jones of Paris.
The UT Tyler debate team is a nationally-recognized and competitive program. Members travel to tournaments throughout the fall and spring semesters.
