The University of Texas at Tyler Office of Student Services will observe 2010 Disability Awareness Day Tuesday, Oct. 26, Ida MacDonald, student services director, announced.
As part of Disability Awareness Month, student services will hold a public presentation featuring guest speaker Ret. Sgt. First Class Dana Bowman at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. that day at the University Center.
Bowman, a double amputee, will present “It’s not the Disability – It’s the Ability!” He lost his legs in an accident during the annual Golden Knights training in Yuma, Ariz. in 1994. Nine months later, Bowman became the first double amputee to re-enlist in the United States Army.
After his re-enlistment, he became the U.S. Parachute Team’s lead speaker and recruiting commander. Bowman retired from the Army in 1996.
His story has been featured in numerous publications and television programs, and he has given more than 400 speeches throughout the United States. Bowman holds a bachelor of science degree in commercial aviation at the University of North Dakota.
