In an effort to extend discussion about The University of Texas at Tyler new student book selection, What is the What?, the UT Tyler Freshman Book Committee will host an informal panel discussion Tuesday, Oct. 12.
The university-wide event will be 9:30 a.m. at the University Center Auditorium and will discuss the role of education in the life of Valentino Achak Deng, who is the book subject.
University discussion panel members are Merrie Wright, assistant professor of art; Dr. Cathy Ross, associate professor of literature and languages; and Dr. Genie Linn, assistant professor of educational leadership and policy studies.
“Guest speakers will share their views and personal experiences related to education in East Texas and abroad. We will also explore our motivations, values and attitudes about education and ask what are we learning for,” Wright said.
Guest speakers include Dr. Hui Wu, UT Tyler Department of Literature and Languages chair; and Abhidnya Ghuge, UT Tyler master of fine arts graduate student.
Dave Eggers’ book was given to every freshman as part of the UT Tyler 2010 Freshman Summer Reading Program. The book recounts Deng’s experiences as a young Sudanese refugee and later as an adult adjusting to a new life in the United States.
