Ian McDaniel, an Ennis senior at The University of Texas a Tyler, is one of 13 mechanical engineering students world-wide to receive an international scholarship for outstanding achievement and leadership, Dr. Y.J. Lin, professor and Department of Mechanical Engineering chair, announced.

McDaniel was awarded the 2010-11 American Society of Mechanical Engineers International Petroleum Technology Institute Petroleum Division Scholarship in the amount of $2,000.

“I am extremely honored to receive this scholarship and want to thank the mechanical engineering faculty for their effort and encouragement in my academic career,” McDaniel said.

Students interested in any phase of the petroleum industry are eligible to apply for the award, which require applicants to submit their transcript and an essay detailing their interest in the field. They also provide a recommendation letter from a faculty adviser and must be a current ASME member in good standing.

“It is a substantial and prestigious award, and we are all very proud to have him among our active ASME student body,” said Lin.

McDaniel plans to graduate in May 2011 with a bachelor of science degree and hopes to be involved in the development of alternative energy solutions across the U.S. and developing countries.

He currently serves as the university’s ASME student chapter chair and is a UT Tyler Reformed University Fellowship member.

Among previous awards and honors, he was named to the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges for the 2009-10 academic year and received the UT Tyler Mechanical Engineering Outstanding Junior Award last spring.

His hobbies include mountain biking and playing ultimate Frisbee and disc golf.

One of the 15 campuses of the UT System, UT Tyler offers excellence in teaching, research, artistic performance and community service. More than 80 undergraduate and graduate degrees are available at UT Tyler, which has an enrollment of more than 6,000 high-ability students at its campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine.
