The University of Texas at Tyler seniors Matthew McClellan of Tyler and Tyler Fisher of Flint will compete in a regional collegiate bass fishing tournament this fall.
The two UT Tyler Bass Club members will represent the university in the 20-team National Guard Forrest L. Wood College Fishing Regional Championship Oct. 28 – 30 at Stephen F. Austin State University on Sam Rayburn Reservoir. This event will be televised nationwide on Versus Sunday, Dec. 5.
They qualified by finishing in the top 10 out of 40 teams at the National Guard FLW College Fishing Bass Tournament on Toledo Bend.
This is the first year UT Tyler participated in the competition.
“For their first year, doing so well against larger schools with more experience is great and once again puts UT Tyler’s name out there,” said Jameson Adams, UT Tyler Bass Club adviser and recreational sports coordinator.
McClellan, a kinesiology major, and Fisher, a management major, are founding members of the club, which began in fall 2009 as both a student organization and recreational club sport.
The top five teams in the regional championship will advance to the national championship for a chance to win $50,000 for their school and $25,000 plus a Ranger 177TR bass boat for their club.
National Guard FLW College Fishing is a nationwide competitive bass-fishing program open to all full-time students at four-year colleges and universities. It consists of 20 qualifying events, five regional championships and the national championship.
