On Sunday, Aug. 22, the Office of New Student Programs will host an all-freshman social event. Community service activities are scheduled 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23. The Office of New Student Programs will partner with the Office of Community Relations to host an all-freshman Day of Service, where students will work with the East Texas Food Bank.
Freshmen will move into on-campus housing on Friday, Aug. 20. Those who registered for Freshman Orientation’s fourth session may move Wednesday, Aug. 18.
New Student Convocation is 11 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24 at the University Center Auditorium. All freshman and transfer students are invited to attend.
This year’s convocation featured speaker is Valentino Achak Deng. Deng is the subject of David Eggers’ book, What is the What, which was given to every freshman as part of the UT Tyler 2010 Freshman Summer Reading Program. The book recounts Deng’s experiences as a young Sudanese refugee and adjusting to a new life in the U.S. as an adult.
During the university’s welcome week, Patriot Palooza on Aug. 23 – Aug. 27, students will have the opportunity to watch God Grew Tired of Us: The Story of the Lost Boys of the Sudan. The movie is about a group of Sudanese refugees who also find themselves adjusting to American life.
Fall classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 25.
