This year’s convocation featured speaker is Valentino Achak Deng. Deng is the subject of David Eggers’ book, What is the What, which was given to every freshman as part of the UT Tyler 2010 Freshman Summer Reading Program. The book recounts Deng’s experiences as a young Sudanese refugee and adjusting to a new life in the U.S. as an adult.

During the university’s welcome week, Patriot Palooza on Aug. 23 – Aug. 27, students will have the opportunity to watch God Grew Tired of Us: The Story of the Lost Boys of the Sudan. The movie is about a group of Sudanese refugees who also find themselves adjusting to American life.

Fall classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 25.
