U.S. Rep. Gohmert to Speak at UT Tyler
U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert will deliver the commencement address for the Colleges of Business and Technology, Education and Psychology and Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Texas at Tyler, President Rodney H. Mabry announced.
Seven hundred ninety three degree candidates will be recognized in the UT Tyler R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center during ceremonies scheduled May 7 and 8.
Gohmert will speak at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, May 8.
The congressman serves on numerous House committees and subcommittees. He was recently named Ranking Member of the Judiciary subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security due to his extensive knowledge stemming from years in the court room.
Dr. MacGregor Stephenson, assistant commissioner of academic affairs and research for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, will deliver the commencement address for the Colleges of Nursing and Health Sciences and Arts and Sciences.
Stephenson joined the board in fall 2008 after serving the Texas A&M University System as associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. During his tenure at the A&M System, he also served as interim director of the Tarleton State University System Center-Central Texas in Killeen. Prior to joining the A&M System, Stephenson was Gov. Rick Perry’s higher education adviser. He holds a Ph.D. in higher education administration and a law degree from the University of Denver.
The commencement schedule is:
- College of Nursing and Health Sciences – 3 p.m. May 7;
- College of Arts and Sciences – 6 p.m. May 7;
- College of Business and Technology – 10 a.m. May 8; and
- Colleges of Education and Psychology and Engineering and Computer Science – 1 p.m. May 8.
President Mabry will give remarks and certify the degree candidates at each ceremony.
Presentation of degree candidates will be made by the deans of each of the university’s colleges: Dr. Alisa White, Arts and Sciences; Dr. Harold Doty, Business and Technology; Dr. William Geiger, Education and Psychology; Dr. James Nelson, Engineering and Computer Science; and Dr. Linda Klotz, Nursing and Health Sciences.
UT Tyler alumni representative Rick Rayford will give alumni association presentations.
