MEDIA ADVISORY: UT Tyler Emergency Notification Test
The University of Texas at Tyler Police Department and the Office of Emergency Management will test the University's emergency notification system, PatriotALERT, at 11:50 a.m. Friday, April 30.
This test is designed to ensure that the system will work properly during an emergency and that the University community is familiar with how emergency messages will be received.
When the test is initiated, all students, faculty and staff will simultaneously receive a phone call, text (SMS) message and e-mail with the test message.
“That morning we will activate the system, and students and staff should expect to receive a text message and a voice telephone call stating that PatriotALERT is being tested,” said Mike Medders, chief of University Police.
The phone call and text message will be sent to the numbers provided by students in the myUTTyler student portal, and to faculty and staff using the numbers provided in the UT Direct System.
If home numbers are included in the contact information, students and employees should notify anyone who might answer at those phone numbers of the test.
“We strongly encourage all students, faculty and staff to use the instructions provided on the PatriotALERT web site to ensure that their telephone contact information, especially their cell phone number, is up-to-date prior to the test,” said Medders. “It is important that information is checked and updated so that we can reach all individuals during an emergency situation.”
Instructions and information on PatriotALERT are located at:
The University plans to test the system once per semester. PatriotALERT is designed to quickly notify thousands of students, faculty and staff during emergencies like severe weather, active shooters, or other critical times.
