HOMETOWN RELEASE: Comanche Resident from UT Tyler Attends National Model UN Conference
Kenisha Schuster of Comanche was one of 15 students from The University of Texas at Tyler recently participated in the 2010 National Model United National Conference in New York City.
At the conference, the UT Tyler delegation represented the Republics of El Salvador and Turkey.
Schuster and another university student also received the “Best Committee Award” representing Turkey in the Security Council. The university’s Model United Nations Program sponsored both students to travel to Turkey in March.
For their excellence in committee, the UT Tyler delegation received its first “Distinguished Delegation Award” in only its fourth year of attendance.
The award recognizes team work, determination, leadership, speaking and negotiation abilities and use of procedure rules. Only five percent of the delegations are honored in such a manner.
The delegation, for the first time in the existence of the program, also received an “Outstanding Position Paper Award” given only to a select few delegations which exemplifies outstanding knowledge of agenda topics and recommended courses of action to effectively address contemporary global problems.
More than 4,000 students from more than 300 universities and colleges attended this year.
The National Model United Nations Conference originated in 1923 as a simulation of the League of Nations. After the creation of the United Nations in 1945, the NMUN adopted its present format. The NMUN is the largest and most prestigious of all collegiate Model United Nations simulations in the world.
One of the 15 campuses of the UT System, UT Tyler offers excellence in teaching, research, artistic performance and community service. More than 90 undergraduate and graduate degrees are available at UT Tyler, which has an enrollment of more than 6,000 high-ability students at its campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine.
