MEDIA ADVISORY: Greg Mortenson at UT Tyler

The University of Texas at Tyler will feature bestselling author Greg Mortenson at the university on Monday, April 12.

The schedule of events for the appearance are:

  • 3 p.m. Marvin United Methodist Church Pirtle Fellowship Hall – Book signing at Marvin United Methodist Church

(The contemporary world culture class is reading Mortenson’s book “Three Cups of Tea” as part of its study on Central Asia and is a registered participant in the Pennies for Peace Campaign. The class is using Mortenson as an example of how one person, with one passion and one purpose can use one penny to enrich the lives of students in Pakistan and Afghanistan.)

  • 5 p.m. Braithwaite Recital Hall – Press conference
  • 5:15 p.m. Braithwaite Recital Hall – UT Tyler honors program student seminar (Q&A)
  • 7:30 p.m. Vaughn Auditorium – Lecture (Sponsored by Betty and Louis Allen Bower. Media sponsors are CBS 19 and East Texas Radio Group.)

“Three Cups of Tea” and “Stones into Schools” tell the story of Mortenson’s effort to build schools for poor villages in rural and often volatile areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

As of 2010, 131 schools have been established and provide education for more than 58,000 children, including 48,000 girls, in areas where few educational opportunities existed before.
