NEWS TIP: UT Tyler Civil Engineering Concrete Canoe Team Prepares to Defend Title
The University of Texas at Tyler Department of Civil Engineering concrete canoe team prepares to defend their regional championship April 10 – 11 in Austin at the 2010 Concrete Canoe Regional Competition.
Team members will hold a friendly competition against university administration, including Dr. James Nelson, UT Tyler College of Engineering and Computer Science dean, and Gregg Lassen, UT Tyler executive vice president for business affairs, at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 8 at the university’s Harvey Lake.
The university community is invited to watch. Refreshments will be served.
- 4 p.m. Races with administration members on Harvey Lake (Other student races will continue throughout afternoon).
- 5 p.m. Hot dogs/refreshments will be served.
- 6 p.m. Student team prepares to load equipment in preparation for their departure to Austin Friday morning.
The team qualified to compete in the American Society of Civil Engineering National Concrete Canoe Competition last June by winning first place overall in the 2009 Texas-Mexico Concrete Canoe Competition held at Padre Island. At nationals, UT Tyler finished in the top 20 of all national entries and received the “Best Spirit” Award.
In competition, participants build canoes with concrete and are judged in four categories: technical design report, oral design presentation, canoe final product and racing.
