HOMETOWN RELEASE: Mount Pleasant Resident to Present Papers at Research Conferences

Jay Nelson of Mount Pleasant, a graduate accounting student at The University of Texas at Tyler, will present papers at two research conferences this month, Dr. Harold Doty, College of Business and Technology dean, announced.

As part of a student group, Nelson will present “A Teaching Case Illustrating Cost-Volume-Profit Relationships in an International Setting” at the 2010 Meeting of the American Accounting Association – Southwest Region.

They also will present “Analyzing the Risks and Benefits of Moving Production Overseas” at the 2010 Meeting of the Southwest Decision Sciences Institute.

“Both papers are teaching cases using a real company as the basis,” said Dr. Gus Gordon, UT Tyler associate professor of accounting. “The AAA paper is focused on calculating the breakeven point in an unusual situation, as well as some performance evaluation issues. The DSI paper looks at the factors to consider when locating a manufacturing plant overseas.”

Nelson will graduate in May 2011 with a master’s degree in business administration and plans to become a licensed certified public accountant.

He serves as treasurer of Beta Alpha Phi and the campus representative for the East Texas Chapter of Texas Society of CPAs. Nelson previously was awarded the Tyler Clearinghouse Association Endowed Scholarship at UT Tyler.

One of the 15 campuses of the UT System, UT Tyler offers excellence in teaching, research, artistic performance and community service. More than 90 undergraduate and graduate degrees are available at UT Tyler, which has an enrollment of more than 6,000 high-ability students at its campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine.
