UT Tyler Offers Fitness and Osteoporosis Prevention Course for Mature Adults
The University of Texas at Tyler Department of Health and Kinesiology is offering a fitness and osteoporosis prevention class for men and women who are at least 60 years old, Dr. Joyce Ballard, professor of health and kinesiology, announced.
All interested participants should attend an orientation session at either 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23 in the UT Tyler Herrington Patriot Center.
“We will have signs that are visible from Old Omen Road that will direct participants to the session. We will meet interested participants at the entrance to the building,” said Ballard, who will conduct the class.
The class will meet 9:30 – 10:35 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday for 65 minutes per session over an eight-week period. The first class meets Tuesday, Feb. 23. Participants will need approval from their personal physician to take the class.
“The level of intensity of the exercise program will be based on the individual capabilities of each participant,” Ballard added.
Participants will work one-on-one with a kinesiology student who will serve as a personal trainer. Ballard will supervise the students.
Ballard has extensive experience conducting exercise designed for osteoporosis prevention and balance training for this age group.
Each session will begin with a measure of resting heart rate and blood pressure followed by a 10-minute warm-up/stretching and 45-minute training session in strength, aerobic, balance and mobility. Sessions will end with a 10-minute cool down/strength followed by an exit heart rate and blood pressure.
