HOMETOWN RELEASE: Van Resident Awarded UT Tyler Volunteer Service Scholarship
Erica Bender of Van, a junior at The University of Texas at Tyler, is one of seven fall 2009 recipients of a university volunteer service scholarship.
Bender received the Stella Crews and Douglas Erwin Dyer Endowed Scholarship for Community Service Award in the amount of $500.
To be considered for the award, applicants must hold a minimum 3.5 GPA and submitted a letter of recommendation and verification of community service participation this semester.
Bender, an English major, will graduate in December 2010. She plans to pursue a master’s degree in special education and teach English at the secondary school level. She is a member of the UT Tyler Council for Exceptional Children and the Patriot Talon student newspaper.
“I am so excited about receiving this generous scholarship, which was awarded to me for doing what I love to do, which is to serve my God and others through my volunteer work at my church. This unexpected blessing will certainly help me pay for textbooks this upcoming semester,” Bender said.
One of the 15 campuses of the UT System, UT Tyler offers excellence in teaching, research, artistic performance and community service. More than 90 undergraduate and graduate degrees are available at UT Tyler, which has an enrollment of more than 6,000 high-ability students at its campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine.
