MEDIA ADVISORY: Jazz Concert at UT Tyler Nov. 16


The University of Texas at Tyler School of Performing Arts will present “Jazz at the Braithwaite” featuring the John Webb Trio, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16 at the UT Tyler Braithwaite Recital Hall.

The public concert will feature Dr. John Webb, UT Tyler professor of music on piano, along with local jazz musicians Alex Blair on bass and Jeff Shelton on drums. Featured music will include re-workings of jazz standards and three original tunes by Webb.

Blair is the orchestra director at Tyler Independent School District. He has performed extensively throughout the southwest and Europe backing up a variety of headliners in the jazz and commercial music world, including Tina Turner, Rita Moreno, Bob Hope, Jack Jones and comedian Foster Brooks.

Shelton is the director of the drum line and percussion ensembles at Grace Community School in Tyler. He has performed with a variety of musicians in the East Texas area, including Larry Greer, Darrell Holt and George Faber. He also works on occasional projects at area recording studios.

Webb is an active jazz performer on saxophone, flute, piano and vocals. His appearances have been with Chuck Berry, Lloyd Price, the Penguins, Freddy Cannon, Herb Jeffries, Crystal Gayle and Steve Wiest, among others. At UT Tyler, he currently teaches courses such as jazz combo, jazz big band, jazz improvisation, jazz piano, jazz history, saxophone studio and cultural music.
