UT Tyler and TJC Enter Partnership to Help Students Earn 4-Year Degrees

The University of Texas at Tyler and Tyler Junior College have become partners in education to help students earn a four-year degree, Dr. Peter J. Fos, UT Tyler provost and vice president for academic affairs, announced.

The partnership includes strategies that will make the transition of TJC graduates to UT Tyler seamless.

“It is always a pleasure to work with Tyler Junior College, and we are very excited about this partnership. Together we can help students complete their bachelor’s degrees by starting at TJC and later transferring to UT Tyler,” Fos said.

As an example, TJC and UT Tyler have completed program equivalency guides between nine academic programs.

“This is just the beginning as we plan to include as many academic programs in the agreement as possible and we will continue to expand our degree offerings in the future,” Fos added.

Through the articulations, students will have a clear roadmap of what courses to complete at TJC during their freshman and sophomore years as well as a clear list of the remaining courses required from UT Tyler during their junior and seniors years leading to the completion of a bachelor’s degree.

The agreement is intended to create a seamless transfer process, support concurrent enrollment when appropriate and assist students in completing their educational objectives.

Officials from both institutions have been meeting since April 2009 to implement the agreement.

“I'm pleased that we are working even more closely with UT Tyler and its fine leaders," said TJC President Dr. Mike Metke.  "President Rod Mabry and Dr.Peter Fos are terrific colleagues who are committed to offering programs of the highest quality and to making sure our TJC students can seamlessly transfer into their baccalaureate programs. Our TJC Provost, Dr. Hayes, shares my high regard for our UT counterparts and we are both excited about these new opportunities for our TJC students."

TJC enrolls more than 12,000 credit students annually. The college offers associate degrees, certificates of proficiency and workforce training programs.

“Student success is the top priority for both institutions. We want all students to benefit from the fine academic programs offered at both TJC and UT Tyler and give them the opportunity to earn a four-year degree. There’s no need for any student to have to leave the area to earn that four-year degree,” Fos added.

UT Tyler has an enrollment of more than 6,000 students and offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees as well as a Ph.D. in nursing.
