MEDIA ADVISORY: UT Tyler New Student Convocation Aug. 25

The University of Texas at Tyler will hold New Student Convocation 10:30 a.m. – noon Tuesday, Aug. 25 at the UT Tyler R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center, Dr. Howard Patterson, UT Tyler vice president for student affairs, announced.

Convocation schedule:

• 10:30 a.m. Welcome by Dr. Robert Sterken, UT Tyler assistant provost for international programs and associate professor of political science.

• 10:35 a.m. Remarks by Dr. Peter Fos, UT Tyler provost and vice president for academic affairs.

• 10:45 a.m. Remarks by UT Tyler President Rodney H. Mabry.

• 10:55 a.m. Steve Lopez will discuss his book, The Soloist: A Lost Dream, An Unlikely Friendship, And The Redemptive Power of Music. Lopez's book has been made into the movie, The Soloist starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. A copy of the book was given to every freshman as part of the UT Tyler 2009 Freshman Summer Reading Program.

• 11:45 a.m. Closing remarks.

• Noon. Book signing in the UT Tyler Cowan Center Lobby. Refreshments will be served.
