UT Tyler to Hold Social Events, Convocation for New Students
The University of Texas at Tyler will hold special events this month for its 2009 freshman class, Ona Tolliver, Office of Student Life and Leadership director, announced.
On Sunday, Aug. 23, the UT Tyler Orientation Planning Committee and orientation leaders will host an all-freshman social event. On Monday, Aug. 24, the Office of New Student Programs will partner with the Office of Community Relations to host an all-freshman Day of Service, where students will work with Habitat for Humanity of Smith County – to help construct a Habitat home with others from the UT Tyler community – and the East Texas Food Bank. Community service activities are scheduled 8 a.m. – noon.
“The activities available to new students during the first week of school will provide an opportunity for them to get to know their fellow classmates and serve the greater Tyler community,” said Laura Jackson, UT Tyler student development specialist who oversees new student and family programs. “We look forward to welcoming the new Patriots.”
Freshmen will move into on-campus housing on Friday, Aug. 21. Those who attend the Aug. 21 – 22 “Quest for Excellence 2009” New Student Orientation will have an option to move in Aug. 20, Jackson added.
New Student Convocation is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25 at the UT Tyler R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center. All freshmen and transfer students are invited to attend.
Award-winning journalist and author Steve Lopez will discuss his non-fiction book, The Soloist: A Lost Dream, An Unlikely Friendship, And The Redemptive Power of Music, which has been made into the 2009 film, The Soloist, starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. A copy of the book was given to every freshman as part of the UT Tyler 2009 Freshman Summer Reading Program.
Students will have the opportunity to watch The Soloist on campus during the university’s welcome week, Patriot Palooza.
Fall classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 26.
