HOMETOWN RELEASE: Huntsville Resident Captures Best Spirit Award with UT Tyler Concrete Canoe Team

Clint McAdams of Huntsville, a senior at The University of Texas at Tyler, is one of 19 students from the UT Tyler American Society of Civil Engineering Student Chapter who won the “Spirit of the Competition Award” during this year’s ASCE National Concrete Canoe competition.

The award recognizes the group’s “good spirit, camaraderie and instances of aiding other competitors,” according to Dr. Ronald Welch, UT Tyler Department of Civil Engineering chair. Participants build canoes with concrete and are judged in four categories: technical design report, oral design presentation, canoe final product and racing.

UT Tyler finished in the top 20 of all entries in the nation.

In only their second year of eligibility, the team advanced to nationals by placing first overall in the Texas-Mexico regional competition with their canoe entry, “The Krewe of Rex.”

“UT Tyler’s canoe weighed 428 pounds, the heaviest at this year’s national competition,” said Dr. Michael McGinnis, UT Tyler Department of Civil Engineering chapter adviser. He and Dr. Clifton Farnsworth traveled with the students to the national competition.

The UT Tyler American Society of Civil Engineering Student Chapter also was awarded the 2009 Region 6 Governor’s Award.

The Department of Civil Engineering, located in the state-of-the-art Bill Ratliff Engineering and Science Complex, began in 2005 and saw its first graduating class in May 2008. Offering both bachelor of science and master of science in civil engineering degrees, the program currently serves more than 100 students.
