MEDIA ADVISORY: Sonya Kovelevsky Day at UT Tyler Encourages Math Exploration
Sonya Kovelevsky Day for local high school female students will be Thursday, March 19 at The University of Texas at Tyler Robert Muntz Library and University Center.
“Sonya Kovelevsky Day is a day the UT Tyler Department of Mathematics brings high school girls to campus for fun math activities,” said Jennifer McLoud-Mann, UT Tyler associate professor of mathematics who serves as co-coordinator for the event. “We hope that our efforts will encourage these young ladies to pursue careers in mathematically-related fields."
Three student groups categorized by grade level will participate in various math activities as well as a campus tour. School districts may register online at http://www.math.uttyler.edu/SKDay/.
The event is named after Kovelevsky (1850-1891) who was regarded as one of the world’s greatest female mathematicians in her time.
Event schedule:
- 8:30 a.m. Muntz Library, room 401 – Welcome from Dr. Alisa White, UT Tyler College of Arts and Sciences dean.
- 8:40 a.m. Muntz Library, room 401 – Sonya Kovelevsky talk.
- 9:20 a.m. University Center Ballroom – “The Mathematics behind Escher’s Drawings.”
- 10:15 a.m. University Center Ballroom – “Fractals in Our World.”
- 11:10 a.m. University Center plaza level – Lunch.
- 12:15 P.M. Campus tour (ends at Muntz Library).
- 1:05 p.m. Muntz Library, room 401 – Cryptography: The Mathematics of Keeping Secrets.
- 1:55 p.m. Muntz Library, room 401 – Refreshments.
- 2:10 p.m. Muntz Library, room 401 – Group competition.
- 3 – 3:15 p.m. Muntz Library, room 401 – Prize session.
