Hill and Wilkinson General Contractors have been selected to construct the new facility at The University of Texas at Tyler Palestine Campus, Gregg Lassen, UT Tyler vice president for business affairs, announced.
The full-service construction firm was founded in 1968 by Luther Hill. It gained national recognition for its practice of building high-profile and “big-business” projects while maintaining the small-business attitude of working closely with the customer and implementing strict standards for quality work.
The company’s portfolio includes numerous projects for such industries as aviation, healthcare, industrial and manufacturing, retail and education. They have completed projects for UT Arlington, Abilene Christian University, Dallas Theological Seminary and Dallas Academy.
Initial site preparation and construction on the $8 million UT Tyler Palestine facility began this month. The project completion date is May 2010.
“It’s a pleasure to announce this next step in the project. We’re excited to begin construction,” Lassen said.
The new building, designed by Barnes Gromatzky Kosarek Architects, will be approximately 17,426 square feet of general classroom and faculty office space. It will provide added space for the expansion of programs, such as nursing, where critical shortages exist throughout the state. It also will accommodate the growth of the campus, which has seen an 89 percent enrollment increase since 2000.
This building project is the result of funds provided by the Tuition Revenue Bond and gifts from the “Paving the Way” Palestine community fundraising campaign.
One of the 15 campuses of the UT System, UT Tyler offers excellence in teaching, research, artistic performance and community service. Nearly 90 undergraduate and graduate degrees are available at UT Tyler, which has an enrollment of more than 6,000 high-ability students at its campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine.
