Jacque Hilburn-Simmons Named UT Tyler Patriot Talon Business Coordinator
Award-winning East Texas journalist Jacque Hilburn-Simmons of Tyler has been named The University of Texas at Tyler student newspaper’s business coordinator, Vanessa Curry, Patriot Talon adviser, announced.
She succeeds Adrienne Graham who accepted a position as executive assistant/public relations officer for the Smith County Commissioners Court.
As the Patriot Talon’s business coordinator, Hilburn-Simmons will oversee the advertising and circulation departments for the weekly newspaper that serves the university’s three campuses.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to support young people as they carve out a niche for themselves in a very dynamic and challenging career path,” Hilburn-Simmons said.
A professional journalist for more than 20 years, Hilburn-Simmons has received numerous awards for her work. The Texas Associated Press Managing Editors Association/Headliner’s Foundation named Hilburn-Simmons “Star Reporter of the Year” in medium market newspapers.
She also was part of a team of Tyler Morning Telegraph reporters who earned the Texas APME/Freedom of Information Award for efforts to uphold citizens’ rights to public information.
“Jacque is a well-rounded reporter and writer who has a great desire to share her experiences with the next generation of journalists,” Curry said. “We are fortunate to have her join our team.”
Hilburn-Simmons holds a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M-Commerce and plans to continue her education at UT Tyler this fall.
