HOMETOWN RELEASE: Crockett Resident Awarded Funds for Research at UT Tyler

E’loria Simon-Campbell of Crockett, a graduate student at The University of Texas at Tyler, won a research grant award in the amount of $500 through a competitive competition held on campus, Dr. Arlene Horne, associate vice president for research and federal relations, announced.

Titled “Empowerment in Hypertensive African American Adults,” her research is in the field of nursing.

A member of the UT Tyler Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society, she will graduate in May 2011 with a Ph.D. in nursing. Simon-Campbell hopes to conduct research to examine solutions for health disparities and improve online nursing education and human simulation. She is the daughter of Frank and Hattie Simon.

Ten graduate and ten undergraduate awards were given for the 2009 spring semester. Student researchers could be awarded up to $500 for his or her research, and the faculty sponsor of the winning students would also be awarded $300 for support of the student project.

“This competition was a great success, and we look for an even better spring semester when all of these recipients will compete against each other in May in a poster competition displaying the results of the research conducted with these funds,” said Horne. “We are proud of these students and are looking forward to much success in their research futures."

The funds will be used to cover project-related expenses, such as wages, supplies, equipment and travel. Faculty sponsors certified each project’s completion. The UT Tyler Research Council reviewed proposals.

Each of the academic deans, the Office of Sponsored Research and the Office of Graduate Studies served as event sponsors.

One of the 15 campuses of the UT System, UT Tyler offers excellence in teaching, research, artistic performance and community service. Nearly 90 undergraduate and graduate degrees are available at UT Tyler, which has an enrollment of more than 6,000 high-ability students at its campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine.
