Meet the Patriots: UT Tyler Junior Joins Forces with Mom through Business

Editor’s Note: The University of Texas at Tyler prides itself on its remarkable ensemble of undergraduates, graduates and alumni. In this 2008-09 feature series, “Meet the Patriots,” we will focus on some of those individuals.

Tiffany and Linda Drake

Tiffany Drake of Lindale has a special relationship with her mother, Linda.

Not only are they a close mother and daughter, but they also are business partners. The junior at The University of Texas at Tyler helps with Linda’s business, which provides custom-made candles, air fresheners and bath and body products.

A full-time state employee and 2001 UT Tyler grad, Linda works the manufacturing side while Tiffany assists with sales, publicity, advertising and marketing. Linda hopes to launch the business full force upon retiring. The business also offers perfect practice for her daughter, who studies public relations and advertising.

“What’s really important to me, as a business woman and as her mom, is the support,” Linda said of her daughter. “She’s come up with some very creative suggestions on designing our print ad materials. Tiffany has been a real inspiration. It’s important to have someone to bounce ideas off of – you can’t single-handedly do everything yourself.”

Getting real-world experience by working with her mother, while receiving a quality education and being close to family is what made UT Tyler appealing to Tiffany.

“Growing up I wanted to study theater and move out of state, but I stayed,” Tiffany explained. “I really like advertising and designing things and figured I can stay close to my family and work with my mom. I enjoy working with her."

By designing ads, producing t-shirts and marketing projects for a business just getting started, Tiffany also is involved in research to test scents.

“My mom smells candles all the time, and her nose is so smelled out, so I help her smell candles. Sometimes I’ve got to tell her what smells good and what doesn’t,” Tiffany said with a laugh.

Tiffany enjoys fishing, shopping and spending time with family. She will graduate with a bachelor of science degree in journalism with an emphasis in public relations in 2011.

One of the 15 campuses of the UT System, UT Tyler offers excellence in teaching, research, artistic performance and community service. Nearly 90 undergraduate and graduate degrees are available at UT Tyler, which has an enrollment of more than 6,000 high-ability students at its campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine.
