HOMETOWN RELEASE: Lindale Resident Awarded UT Tyler Volunteer Service Scholarship
Warren Brown of Lindale, a senior at The University of Texas at Tyler, received the Bonnie and Scott Palmer Service Scholarship in the amount of $500.
Brown plans to graduate in May 2009 with a bachelor of science degree in speech communication. A member of the UT Tyler men’s cross country team, he is actively involved in the university’s Relay for Life, an event held nationwide to raise funds for cancer research and awareness to the disease. Brown will pursue a master of business administration degree.
“I hope accolades such as this will encourage students to contribute to our community and show them that their efforts are appreciated,” he said.
The scholarship is presented each semester to exceptional UT Tyler students who show service accomplishments either on campus or for non-profit organizations. To be considered for the award, students completed an essay detailing service project involvement and how the service contributed to their academic goals and personal growth. They also submitted a letter of recommendation.
Scott and Bonnie Palmer have been involved with giving to UT Tyler since 2000, starting with President’s Associates, Cowan Center Circle of Friends and the Heritage Society. When Scott died in June 2006, an endowed scholarship was established in his memory, with many friends and family joining Bonnie in contributing to the fund.
One of the 15 campuses of the UT System, UT Tyler offers excellence in teaching, research, artistic performance and community service. Nearly 90 undergraduate and graduate degrees are available at UT Tyler, which has an enrollment of more than 6,000 high-ability students at its campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine.
