UT Tyler Receives $1 Million Gift from Bob Herd Family
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Herd have established a $1 million endowed presidential scholarship at The University of Texas at Tyler, President Rodney H. Mabry announced.
The gift of the Mr. and Mrs. Bob Herd Presidential Scholarship will assist 15 to 25 first-rate students each year and comes at a time when endowed scholarships rank as the highest priority for the university, according to President Mabry.
Funding for endowed scholarships enables UT Tyler to offer competitive scholarship awards to academically-talented students and provides need-based scholarships to other well-qualified students. The Herd scholarship endowment, and others like it, one not only help students for all time but also grows with compounding interest and provides even greater assistance each year.
“Scholarship support is the key to attracting and graduating more high-ability students who, in turn, will ultimately become valued professionals helping to strengthen the economy of East Texas and valuable citizens and neighbors to all of us. We are so grateful to the Herds for their generosity and foresight,” President Mabry said.
The Herds have been UT Tyler donors since 1982. They have five adult children.
“In addition to their long-time support of student scholarships, they have been annual members of UT Tyler’s President’s Associates and also have underwritten the university’s Distinguished Lecture Series,” President Mabry added.
One of the 15 campuses of the UT System, UT Tyler offers excellence in teaching, research, artistic performance and community service. Nearly 90 undergraduate and graduate degrees are available at UT Tyler, which has an enrollment of more than 6,000 high-ability students at its campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine.
