HOMETOWN RELEASE: Tyler Resident Awarded UT Tyler History Scholarship
Michael Anderson of Tyler is a 2008 history scholarship recipient at The University of Texas at Tyler, Dr. Edward Tabri, associate professor of history, announced.
Anderson, a UT Tyler senior, received the Edwin Morgan Syrl and Frank H. Smyrl Endowed History Scholarship in the amount of $750.
The Edwin Morgan Smyrl and Frank H. Smyrl Endowed History Scholarship honors the memory of Dr. Frank H. Smyrl, the first historian to join the UT Tyler faculty, and his brother, historian Edwin Morgan Smyrl. Frank Smyrl was the founding department chair and dean of the UT Tyler College of Liberal Arts.
“This will help me in my historical studies providing a perspective on change as it affects civilization,” said Anderson. “I do feel education affords me a better understanding of the world in which we now live and what it may be in the near future.”
Anderson expects to graduate from UT Tyler in December 2009. He plans to attend graduate school and eventually obtain a doctorate in history or historical geography.
The Department of History presents scholarships to declared history majors in recognition of excellent academic performance and for the purpose of encouraging the study of history at the university. Fields will be recognized during an awards banquet in April 2009.
