NEWS TIP: GEAR UP Camp

The science and engineering departments at The University of Texas at Tyler are providing summer educational activities to Tyler GEAR UP students.

Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs is UT Tyler’s $3.1 million grant project awarded by the U.S. Department of Education. It is designed to improve the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.

The camp will conclude Friday, June 27.

Activities include:

Wednesday, June 25

9 am – 12 pm: Biology – examining different species of animals

1 – 4 pm: Chemistry – using food coloring to examine color and light

Thursday, June 26

9 am – 12 pm: Physics – waves and motion, using pitch forks to calculate the speed of sound, magnets and their properties

1 – 4 pm: Physics – aerospace/rockets (depending on weather)

Friday, June 27

9 am – 12 pm: Engineering – constructing air conditioners

1 – 4 pm: Chemistry – reactions between Mentos candy and diet Coke
