UT Tyler Cowan Center Announces 2008 - 09 Season

martin shortEmmy- and Tony-Award winner Martin Short will open the 2008 – 09 Gotta Have It! Season at The University of Texas at Tyler R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center, Susan Thomae-Morphew, UT Tyler Cowan Center director, announced.
The upcoming 12th season was announced today at a press conference.

Season ticket orders for all four of the season’s series are on sale now. They can be purchased at the UT Tyler Cowan Center box office or online at www.CowanCenter.org. Box office hours are 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. To reach the box office, call 903.566.7424.

“Opening the season with funnyman Martin Short is just what Tyler ordered. He is known for his run on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ hit movies and Broadway. His latest Tony was in 2007 for his Broadway one-man-show ‘Fame Becomes Me,’ ” said Thomae-Morphew.
The Gotta Have It! Season offers a variety of performing arts, dance, Broadway, music and lecture events for audiences in the East Texas community.

“We make a priority of building seasons filled with a variety of stars and sensational shows each and every year. We’ve filled this year with programming to make you feel you’ve just ‘gotta have it.’ From Ruben Studdard and Martin Short to Itzhak Perlman and Olympia Dukakis, I’m confident that this year’s performances will appeal to all generations of our patrons,” Thomae-Morphew added.

The new season brings a couple of new things for area art lovers. In addition to the traditional Cowan Center series, a major A-List celebrity will appear as part of a red carpet gala in early 2009 to kick-off an important endowment campaign, according to Thomae-Morphew.

Also, in April the Cowan Center announced its collaboration with the East Texas Symphony Orchestra to present a concert next year by violinist Itzhak Perlman.

“We’ve been working with ETSO for years to co-present Mr. Perlman. With the Braithwaite endowment awarded to both organizations and additional sponsors, we are able to bring Tyler and the whole region this world-class artist,” said Thomae-Morphew.

Tickets to the April 4, 2009 concert will go on sale for Cowan Center members and ETSO donors first. Both organizations’ subscribers may purchase second. The general public will be the third group to purchase.

Building on the successful residency of MASS Ensemble in the spring, the Cowan Center will host acclaimed guitarist Robert Bluestone and his wife, Rebecca, an award-winning weaver. Their residency, called Woven Harmony, will include performances and workshops Sept. 30 through Oct. 4 during National Arts Awareness Week. A special matinee concert on Oct. 4 will culminate the event.
