UT Tyler to Hold Contest Seeking Fight Song Lyrics
The University of Texas at Tyler will hold a contest seeking lyrics for a fight song to be used during homecoming and special activities, Bobbye Rucker, alumni association director, announced.
Both university students and alumni are invited to participate in the contest. Lyrics need to be eight to 16 lines and may be edited for arrangement. Dr. Jeffrey Emge, music department chair, will compose the music for the fight song.
Submission deadline is Aug. 1.
The lyricist chosen will receive $100 and special recognition during Homecoming 2008. A selection committee will choose the winning lyrics Aug. 5. An entry form can be found online at www.pastpatriots.com.
“I think that it is important for UT Tyler to have a fight song that is uniquely our own,” said Carey O’Kelly, student affairs specialist, who oversees campus activities and serves on the selection committee. “It will be something to celebrate the special place that UT Tyler is, the continuing and growing success of our athletics program as well as something that the students will associate with all of the exciting things that are happening here now and will happen in the future.
“Allowing students and alumni the opportunity to be involved in the creation of our fight song will help to establish it as a tradition that the whole campus can embrace.”
