HOMETOWN RELEASE: Longview Resident Awarded UT Tyler Service Scholarship
Anup Bhandari of Longview is a 2008 spring semester recipient of a service scholarship at The University of Texas at Tyler, Dr. Lou Ann Berman, assistant vice president for student success, announced.
Bhandari, a UT Tyler junior from Nepal, received the Bonnie and Scott Palmer Service Scholarship in the amount of $250.
The scholarship is presented to exceptional UT Tyler students who show service accomplishments for non-profit organizations and /or on the UT Tyler campus. To be considered for the award, students completed an essay detailing service project involvement and how the service contributed to their academic goals and personal growth. They also submitted a letter of recommendation.
A member of the UT Tyler Art Club, Bhandari has raised funds for the 2005 tsunami victims in Southeast Asia by selling his art work. From the sales, $1,750 was sent to the International Red Cross’ Tsunami Relief Effort. He also collected toys and clothes at UT Tyler for an orphanage in Nepal.
Bhandari plans to graduate in 2009 with a bachelor of fine arts degree in art. Upon graduation, he would like to continue in volunteer work helping people in third world countries.
Scott and Bonnie Palmer have been involved with giving to UT Tyler since 2000, starting with President’s Associates, Cowan Center Circle of Friends and the Heritage Society. When Scott died in June 2006, an endowed scholarship was established in his memory, with many friends and family joining Bonnie in contributing to the fund.
