UT Tyler Students Awarded University Service Scholarships

Bhandari and DeSalvo

Two University of Texas at Tyler students are 2008 spring semester recipients of a service scholarship, Dr. Lou Ann Berman, assistant vice president for student success, announced.

UT Tyler juniors Sarah DeSalvo of Tyler and Anup Bhandari of Longview each received the Bonnie and Scott Palmer Service Scholarship in the amount of $250.

The scholarship is presented to exceptional UT Tyler students who show service accomplishments for non-profit organizations and /or on the UT Tyler campus. To be considered for the award, students completed an essay detailing service project involvement and how the service contributed to their academic goals and personal growth. They also submitted a letter of recommendation.

A journalism major at UT Tyler, DeSalvo has served as a volunteer for the Literacy Council of Tyler as an English as a second language director/teacher since 2005.

DeSalvo plans to graduate in May 2009 with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism, specializing in public relations. Upon graduation, she would like to become a freelance travel writer and an international ESL teacher.

A member of the UT Tyler Art Club, Bhandari, who is from Nepal, has raised funds for the 2005 tsunami victims in Southeast Asia by selling his art work. From the sales, $1,750 was sent to the International Red Cross’ Tsunami Relief Effort. He also collected toys and clothes at UT Tyler for an orphanage in Nepal.

Bhandari plans to graduate in 2009 with a bachelor of fine arts degree in art. Upon graduation, he would like to continue in volunteer work helping people in third world countries.

Scott and Bonnie Palmer have been involved with giving to UT Tyler since 2000, starting with President’s Associates, Cowan Center Circle of Friends and the Heritage Society. When Scott died in June 2006, an endowed scholarship was established in his memory, with many friends and family joining Bonnie in contributing to the fund.

More than 90 undergraduate and graduate degrees are available at UT Tyler, which has an enrollment of more than 6,000 high-ability students at its campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine.
