UT Tyler's East Texas STEM Center Provides Learning Opportunity
The University of Texas at Tyler’s East Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Center will provide local high school students a learning opportunity in the field of geosciences next summer.
UT Tyler’s East Texas STEM Center has partnered with UT Austin’s Jackson School of Geosciences to offer selected rising high school juniors an opportunity to participate in a GeoForce summer program.
Students who are admitted to this program will participate in an all expenses-paid field trip June 30 and July 1, 2008, to Jackson School of Geosciences at UT Austin and several locations of geologic significance in Central Texas, including Inner Space Cavern and McKinney Falls State Park. Students will be introduced to fascinating geological concepts through hands-on activities led by UT Austin faculty and staff scientists.
Applications are due Monday, Jan. 14, 2008.
GeoForce Texas is a summer program funded by the National Science Foundation that rewards outstanding high school students with the opportunity to travel, meet new people and learn about exciting opportunities for careers in the sciences.
“The goal of the GeoForce program is to expose students who have completed 10th grade to the geosciences, especially students underrepresented in the field, such as females and minorities, in a way that inspires them to actively pursue geology as a course of study in the future,” said Dr. Michael Odell, UT Tyler Celia and Sam Roosth endowed chair, who also serves as East Texas STEM Center director.
