UT Tyler Student Development Director Receives State Award

Sutton and Ashley Ward

Mindy Sutton, director of student development at The University of Texas at Tyler, has received an award from the Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrators, Dr. Howard Patterson, UT Tyler interim vice president of student affairs and external relations, announced.

Sutton received the Mid-Level Student Affairs Professional Award during the TACUSPA’s annual fall conference. Dr. Lou Ann Berman, assistant vice president for student success, nominated Sutton for the award, which recognizes significant contributions to the profession and TACUSPA as well as expertise in creating a campus environment that promotes student learning and professional development.

“It’s nice to receive this sort of recognition for work you enjoy doing,” Sutton said.

Sutton and UT Tyler academic advisor II Ashley Ward, who suggested Sutton be nominated. Ward previously served in the Office of Student Development.

Directing a staff of seven, Sutton oversees student life programs and various campus activities. In 2006, she was instrumental in implementing Greek life on campus that currently includes two fraternities and four sororities.

A UT Tyler staff member since 2005, Sutton holds a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Southern Methodist University and a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs from Indiana University.

TACUSPA is a volunteer association consisting of student affairs staff, faculty and students in Texas from two- and four-year colleges and universities.
