Garnesha Beck of Shreveport, La has been named The University of Texas at Tyler’s new AmeriCorps* VISTA service leader, Mindy Sutton, UT Tyler director of student development, announced.

Beck will work with faculty to provide student service-learning opportunities within UT Tyler’s curriculum. She also will work with student organizations and the student population to provide community service to the East Texas area.

Beck was chosen from many within and outside Texas who applied to be UT Tyler’s second VISTA service leader. She holds an MBA from the University of Dallas and a bachelor’s degree from Grambling State University in Louisiana.

“Garnesha has extensive experience in the university environment,” said Carol Killingley, UT Tyler student affairs administrative service officer in the community relations office and parent resource center. “She has been involved in major projects with the Food Bank organization and other community service organizations.”

Beck will begin her work at the university July 23, after completing VISTA training in Austin.

“UT Tyler will be able to encourage and facilitate community service and service-learning for our students,” said Killingley. “UT Tyler is appreciative of this very positive opportunity to assist our students in further developing their citizenship skills and values.”

The term of Whitney Patterson of Tyler, UT Tyler’s first VISTA service leader, will end July 20.
