Formed to celebrate the unique and inspirational power of African gospel music, the choir draws talent from many of the churches in and around Soweto. It mixes earthy rhythms and harmonies to express the energy of South Africa.
Since forming in 2002, the Soweto Gospel Choir has performed in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Singapore and the United States.
They’ve been honored with Australia’s prestigious Helpmann Award for best contemporary music concert, American Gospel Music Award for best choir and Gospel Music Award for best international choir.
Their debut CD, Voices from Heaven, reached number 1 on the Billboard Music Chart within three weeks of its U.S. release.
Soweto is the most populous black urban residential area in South Africa, with the 2001 Census putting its population at 896,995. As a result of its proximity to Johannesburg, the economic hub of the country, Soweto also is the most metropolitan township, setting trends in politics, fashion, music, dance and language.
