UT Tyler Awarded Charter School
November 18, 2011
The State Board of Education granted a charter to The University of Texas Tyler Innovation Academy. The university-run charter is expected to open in the fall of 2012 for grades 3-6, President Rodney H. Mabry announced.
“We are very excited about this opportunity to work with the community. We believe this initiative will allow us to continue to expand the university’s influence within educational programming in East Texas,” said Dr. Michael Odell, associate vice president for sponsored research and director of federal relations.
Once final contractual issues are resolved and the contract with the state is signed, UT Tyler plans to have charter campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine.
Those three campuses are authorized to serve up to 2,400 students. Another grade will be added each year until the schools ultimately serve students in grades 3-12. High school students will be able to take dual credit courses through UT Tyler.
