UT Tyler Offers Mentoring Program to New Students

October 25, 2011

To promote retention and enhance success, UT Tyler offers a mentoring program designed to support new students during their first-year experience.

The Patriot Freshman Connection program assists freshmen with their academic, personal and social transition to UT Tyler. Under the Patriot Freshman Connection, all freshmen are assigned a faculty/staff campus mentor and peer mentor who are in contact with them via their Patriot email account during the semester.

“This program gives freshmen a strong connection to UT Tyler. It is such a special opportunity for faculty, staff and student mentors to give back. We are excited that seasoned, successful Patriots are eager to share their knowledge with new Patriots,” said Adrian Lodge, program coordinator.

Mentors provide guidance to help new students successfully navigate their freshman year. They also serve as a resource by discussing academic and personal goals, promoting involvement and answering questions.

“Mentors can assist students with a wide variety of questions and concerns, such as, ‘How do I get involved on campus?’ to ‘Where do I go to get help with my resume?’ to “I am feeling homesick and don’t know what to do,’” Lodge added.

Freshmen are automatically enrolled in the program. Participation is not mandatory, but students are encouraged to get to know their mentors and use them for support.

“Research shows that once students are connected and engaged, they are more invested in completing their education, and we want to help students create a relationship with the campus and its community,” said Ona Tolliver, assistant vice president for student affairs and dean of students. “Together, faculty/staff and peer mentors will help our new students with their crucial first-year experience.”

The faculty/staff portion of the mentoring program is already underway, Lodge added. Students with more than 30 credit hours are encouraged to participate as peer mentors. Mentor training will be provided at an introduction meeting to be announced.
