2011 UT Tyler New Student Convocation

Award-winning author Yann Martel (second row, third from left) served as this year’s New Student Convocation speaker. All freshman and transfer students were invited to attend the Aug. 23 event held in the University Center theater.

Martel’s 2001 fantasy adventure novel, Life of Pi, was given to every freshman as part of the UT Tyler 2011 Freshman Summer Reading Program.

A book signing followed the convocation.
