Spotlight: Carolyn Tilghman
September 8, 2010
Dr. Carolyn Tilghman, associate professor of English, attended the 2010 Freeman Summer Institute on Japan at the Tokai University Pacific Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.
As a Freeman fellow, Tilghman joined colleagues specializing in diverse disciplines from colleges and universities across the United States. They met for an intensive three-week course of study designed to assist college faculty to incorporate Japan studies into the undergraduate curriculums of their respective departments and schools. Workshop participants attended lectures presented by eminent scholars and experts versed in Japanese history, religion, politics, foreign policy, economics, social issues, theatre, art, literature and language.
Lectures were supplemented by planned events focused on various aspects of Japanese culture, including film, music, shodo, ikebana, the tea ceremony and by informal discussions and gatherings.
