UT Tyler Begins Existing UC Renovation
December 8, 2008

Crews begin to install safety fencing around the construction/staging area for the existing University Center renovation. During the completion of the renovation, a portion of Parking Lot 3 will be unvailable for about a year.
Due to work that has begun to enhance the existing University Center, a portion of Parking Lot 3 will be temporarily used for construction staging, Gregg Lassen, vice president for business affairs, announced.
“One of the exciting aspects of the renovation project is the inclusion of a new 300-plus seat auditorium/theater along the north wall of the UC,” said Lassen. “One section of the UC parking lot will be used for staging, and safety fencing will be installed around the exterior of the auditorium expansion area and staging area, so pardon the inconvenience as we work to bring you a much improved UC.”
This portion of the lot will be unavailable during the completion of the renovation. Alternative parking lots available include lots 2, 6, 10 and 15.
The interior renovation will begin January 2009, and the University Center, with its new state-of-the-art look, is expected to reopen in 2010, according to Chip Clark,
director of facilities planning, construction and operations.
“Overall, the building will be more energy efficient and house a fully-expanded, two-story bookstore, relaxing study and social spaces and a new stairway in the middle of the first-floor atrium,” Clark added. “It will also provide offices and meeting spaces for student government, student services, testing and many other student-related programs and benefits.”
