Retired UT Tyler Professor to Be Honored

Dr. Evelyn Granville, noted mathematician and educator, will be honored by the Tyler/East Texas Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb, 18 at the Tyler Museum of Art.
The event is a part of TMA’s Black History month recognition and celebration.
Dr. Granville, who holds a place in U.S. history as the second black woman to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics, served as a professor at UT Tyler for seven years before retiring.
Her nearly 50-year career includes such illustrious accomplishments as developing programs for IBM, formulating orbit computations and computer procedures for NASA’s Vanguard and Mercury projects, as well as professorships at UT Tyler, Fisk University and Texas College.
She continues to contribute to the education of tomorrow’s leaders by conducting math camps for public school students.
The Washington, D.C. native earned her Ph.D. from Yale University in 1949.
