UT Tyler Teams Head to Crescent City, Patriots to be Honored

The University of Texas at Tyler men’s and women’s basketball teams will travel to New Orleans, La. for double-header against the University of New Orleans on Saturday in a reunion between the programs that shared a home in Tyler a year ago.

The games are set for 2 p.m. (women) and 7 p.m. (men) at the Human Performance Center on the UNO campus.

Last year, UT Tyler opened its doors to the Privateers when Hurricane Katrina destroyed UNO’s Kiefer Lakefront Arena, and most of the New Orleans campus, leaving the teams without a home. The UNO teams, members of the Division 1 Sun Belt Conference, spent just over four months in Tyler and played their early-season home basketball games at UT Tyler’s Herrington Patriot Center.

“UT Tyler was able to host the UNO men's and women's basketball programs on our campus for the fall semester as a result of them being displaced by Hurricane Katrina. We got to know the coaches, student athlete and administrators and enjoyed the experience,” said UT Tyler athletics director Dr. Howard Patterson. “UNO has asked us to come to New Orleans to play two basketball games, but the weekend also involves other activities.”

UT Tyler will be honored during the games and at a special reception on Saturday afternoon between the women’s and men’s games.

On Sunday morning, UT Tyler and UNO basketball players will team up in a special community service project in Musicians’ Village, part of the Ninth Ward in New Orleans. The teams will participate in a Habitat for Humanity project aimed at creating homes for displaced New Orleans musicians. The project is part of the first large-scale rebuilding plan in New Orleans.

“It will be a great weekend of basketball and also, hopefully help make a difference in some people's lives”, said Patterson.

The games can be heard live on the Internet at www.uttyler.edu/athletics.
