Dr. Thomas Allen Passes Away

Dr. AllenFuneral services for Dr. Thomas Allen, associate professor of music and director of the UT Tyler Choir, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 8 at Glenwood United Methodist Church in Tyler.

Dr. Allen, 61, died March 4, 2006 after a brief illness.

A member of the UT Tyler music faculty since 1991, he served as chair of the music department for seven years and directed choral activities for 15 years.

“Tom was a consummate professional who dedicated his life to music and to the education of future musicians,” said Dr. Donna Dickerson, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Allen served the University in many ways, most recently as president of the 2003-04 Faculty Senate.

Born April 10, 1944 he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Northern Colorado and a doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Arizona.

Other teaching assignments were held at UT El Paso, University of Arizona and Wichita State University.

Dr. Allen is survived by his wife of 32 years, Jane; and children, Elizabeth (Travis) Ellis and Meredith Allen, both of Tyler; and Jason Allen and Geoffrey Allen, both of Fort Worth; four grandchildren, Andrew, Joshua and Jacob Allen and Baylee Ellis; his mother, Elizabeth Crawford; brothers, Robert (Wendy) Allen and John (Mary) Allen; sister, Susan (Jim) Colegrove; and numerous nieces, nephews, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be 6 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 7 at Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home in Tyler.

Memorials may be made to Glenwood United Methodist Church or a UT Tyler music scholarship being established in Dr. Allen’s name.
