UT Tyler Encouraging Fitness Participation in Texas Round-Up
President Rodney Mabry is encouraging all UT Tyler faculty and staff to participate in Gov. Rick Perry’s 3rd annual Texas Round-Up Fitness Initiative.
The Texas Round-Up is a statewide effort to encourage Texans of all fitness levels to incorporate daily physical activity and healthy choices into their lives. The program asks participants to be physically active for at least 30 minutes a day five days a week, or 150 minutes a week, for six weeks.
The UT Tyler competition will be held March 6 – April 29 with the option of participating the week of spring break.
UT Tyler is competing with other state agencies for the Governor’s Cup, which is awarded to the “fittest agency in Texas.” Competition is based on the percentage of full-time employee participants.
University incentives include time to participate and Patriot Center access, prizes and special wellness programs.
To sign-up, visit www.active.com/fitness/myInfo.cfm, and add UT Tyler as your state agency under employer information.
“To get started, evaluate the types of activities you do daily like the time it takes to walk from your car to your office, and add a little more activity to it. Even the smallest change can make a difference,” said Dr. Jim Schwane, UT Tyler chair and professor of health and kinesiology and co-coordinator of the UT Tyler Texas Round-Up.
The 30 minutes can be accumulated throughout the day or at one time. Activities include, but are not limited to, walking between campus buildings, taking stairs instead of elevators, walking while shopping, yard work and aerobic, cardio or strength work-outs, added Dr. Schwane.
Local incentives for participation include expense-paid trips for two to the Texas Round-Up celebration in Austin April 29, which include activities such as a 10K run/walk, a 5K run/walk, a family mile, a health and fitness festival, health expo and a post race celebration concert all on the Texas State Capitol grounds.
