Hurricane Katrina: Information for UT Tyler Community
Designated Shelter Area
The first floor of the Herrington Patriot Center has been designated as the UT Tyler American Red Cross shelter. This includes the Fisch Convocation Center, select showers and a dining area. Signage indicates what is for use by the shelter and by the University community.
A park has been created for the evacuees near the entrance of the shelter, west of the HPC. Evacuees have access to the intramural field when not in use y UT Tyler students.
Evacuees do not have access to other areas of the campus including academic buildings, the University Center and the library.Follow this link for UT Tyler Map showing designated shelter area.
UT Tyler Shelter Entrance and Parking
All volunteers, buses and other vehicles, except for commercial food services, that need to reach the UT Tyler shelter should use the University entrance off of Spur 248 to Parking Lot 15 (look for the Red Cross sign on Spur 248).
NOTE: The circular driveway in front of the shelter entrance of the Herrington Patriot Center is a fire lane. If dropping off donations, your car must be manned at all times so it can be moved quickly if necessary.
Commercial Food Service Deliveries
All commercial food services should use the University main entrance off of Old Omen Road to Parking Lot 2. Enter the HPC through the academic wing (far left when facing building) and take elevator to first floor.
Shelter Bracelet ID System
Evacuees can be identified by a white wristband worn on the right arm. Their names are written in red.
Volunteers and shelter staff are wearing two writstbands -- one white, one green -- on the left arm, and their names are written in green.
The evacuees are being housed in the Fisch Convocation Center (gymnasium) and are using HPC locker rooms. The evacuees are not permitted into the fitness center area, the general use locker rooms or the HPC pool and are to remain on the first floor of the HPC while in the building.
Please be aware that interaction with the evacuees may occur if you are going to or from the general locker rooms on the first floor of the HPC. Please be prepared to present your UT Tyler ID card if asked.
The University may be providing disaster relief for a period of up to 30 days. Thank you for your understanding as UT Tyler does its part to help those affected by this disaster.
