Tyler and Smith County officials have been advised that residents may return to communities west of I-45 all the way to the coast including residents of Houston, Pasadena, Baytown, League City, Texas City, Galveston Island, Bolivar Peninsula, Richmond, Rosenberg, Sugar Land, Pearland and surrounding communities.

Shelters - The number of Hurricane Rita evacuees sheltered in Tyler and Smith County continues to drop. The count as of 11 a.m. today is 2,302, which is down from a high of more than 3,500 on Saturday.

Volunteers - Special needs shelters at Tyler Junior College and Primitive Baptist Church are in need of nurse volunteers for all shifts. Those who can help need to call 903-595-1350 or 903-535-0028.

Food - Meals will be available at the Salvation Army office, 622 N. Broadway Ave., for Hurricane Rita evacuees who are not staying in shelters.

Signals – All traffic signals in the City of Tyler are working properly.

Power - TXU is reporting that there are still 3,600 customers in Smith and Van Zandt counties without power. TXU representatives have assured City officials that all power in Tyler should be restored by the end of the day.

Debris - Street sweepers and street crews continue to remove debris from City streets. The street sweepers will run longer shifts to help clean up the City. Officials estimate it will take one to two weeks to remove all the debris left over from the hurricane.

Brush – The City of Tyler is asking residents to put brush at the curb in sizes that can easily be handled by garbage crews. This debris will be picked up beginning Monday pursuant to regular garbage schedules, and may take more than a week to be picked up due to the volume.
